A simple take on the ubiquitous Safety Match Box, this piece is part of a larger collection Congdon created after a 10 day residency in both Osaka and Kyoto, Japan. This vibrant body of work pays homage to her memorable experiences in Japan, while honoring the rich cultural heritage of the place and its people. Lisa combines her signature style of saturated, graphic illustration with visual motifs from an eclectic range of sources — iconic Kyoto street foods, patterned kimono silks, kokeshi dolls, matchboxes, and other snippets from her mind’s eye — to render her personal perspective and engagement within each city.
