Since early January 2013, my friend Maria Popova and I have collaborated on a project called The Recontructionists. Each Monday we have posted a drawing and an essay about a woman we admire, — a woman who has changed the face of history. Yesterday, the final Reconstructionist of the year, Simone de Beauvoir, went up on our blog. Working on this project with Maria has been a fantastic experience. I have learned so much, and I hope our readers have too.
Below a compilation of all the 55 portraits from the project. You can read all of the accompanying essays here.
Happy Friday, friends. See you Monday!
It’s that time of the year when it’s all about the food. Enjoy, friends!
Last weekend I went with my friend Mati on a field trip to a place called Brushstrokes in Berkeley, California. It’s a place where you can paint pre-made (but unfired) ceramics — like plates and bowls, mugs and platters. I was really excited to do this (it’s something Mati and I have been talking about doing together forever), but I was admittedly a little intimidated. And it was not like drawing or painting on paper. The paint was thick, and the surface a bit rough and grainy. I had to draw realllly slowly and keep a very steady hand. But I did manage to make the plate pictured above. And I had so a great time that I plan to go back again after Christmas. This plate is now being fired, and when it’s finished, I’ll post a photo so you can see the finished product.
Here’s Mati with her bowl, donning one of her famous cats!
Have a happy Thursday, friends!
Another quote from my forthcoming book. Have a great Wednesday!
This quote from my upcoming book Whatever You Are, Be a Good One, which comes out this spring.
Also, today is the last day to place an order before January. All orders must be received by December 18, 8 a.m., PST.
Have a great Tuesday.
On January 1, 2012, Mary Jo Hoffman started a personal project called STILL. For nearly two years, she has photographed bits of nature every day. Sometimes the assemblages are arranged on an imaginary grid, sometimes in clever shapes, and sometime more haphazardly. Most of the stuff she photographs is stuff she finds wandering around the natural environment near her home in Minnesota. She photographs in natural light, mostly in her home. Her compositions are always beautiful.
You can follow Mary Jo’s adventure (and peruse backward) here. You can shop her beautiful products here. Enjoy!
And happy Monday.
10 different mornings in the last two months (outside my living room window at dawn).
Have a wonderful weekend, friends.
Hi friends! Today I made my final additions to my shop before the holidays. I have added six new original pieces to my shop. My last day to order before holiday shipping is Wednesday, December 18 at 8 a.m. PST. I will be closing my shop until January the morning of December 18.
You can view all of the new additions here.
Super excited to have this new print through The Bold Italic in San Francisco. It’s entitled San Francisco in 23 Places, it’s signed and dated, and you can get it here for just $20. (Hint: a great gift for anyone who loves this city!).
Have a great Tuesday, friends.
Something I’m working on diligently right now.
Have a great week, friends.
The world is mourning this loss of this great man who stood for love and justice and everything good. His spirit will live on. Rest in peace, Nelson Mandela!
I hope everyone has a peaceful weekend!
I have been a bit obsessed with painting abstracts lately. You may remember early in 2013 (almost a year ago) I proclaimed I was going to dive head first into abstract painting, and once I started I haven’t been able to stop. I only wish I had more time to paint like this all the time (note to self: make more time). Above is my latest, 36×36 inches, acrylic on canvas. I’m going to spend the month of January painting abstracts and making abstract mixed media works in my studio. Sort of like a stay-art-cation/home artist residency.
This one sold already, but I am taking commissions for abstracts, so please feel free to email me if you are interested. The pricing depends on size and I do require a 50% deposit to begin. Let me know if you are interested and we can go from there.
Have a great Wednesday!
