Mia + Summer = The Best

07/31/12

Remember when I told you my 12 year old niece Mia was coming to stay for two weeks this summer? Well, she’s here! And so far it’s been, well…awesome. While she’s here, she’s attending this amazing program for middle school age kids at CCA during the day (and taking classes in animation, graphic design and drawing). Mia hails from Portland where she lives with my talented sister and her family.

She arrived Saturday, so today we’re on Day 4 of her visit. Mia loves to draw (please note the awesome portrait she made of me above!), read Manga, watch the Olympics (she loves beach volleyball the most), send text messages with her friends at home, hold my cat Margaret, sneak treats to Wilfredo, EAT (she’s 5’7″ and growing rapidly taller still), and play video games on my iPad. She’s also really into exploring San Francisco (which she says is “just like Portland except bigger, and there’s more to do.”).

Clay and I are loving having Mia around — she is so full of love and light, curiosity and humor. Another perk for me besides her warm-hearted, sweet and generous demeanor? She lets me fix her long, beautiful hair every morning.

I love this kid so much, and I am so looking forward to the next 11 days we have left together.

Glósóli

07/30/12

As many of you know, my partner Clay and I are obsessed with the Icelandic band Sigur Rós. My favorite Sigur Rós song of all time is Glósóli, which means “glowing sun.” I spent Sunday morning with my friend Stephen, talking about Iceland (the home country of Sigur Rós), where I am headed September 5. Stephen went to Iceland last year and is going in October for Iceland Airwaves.

Stephen and I have a shared love for Sigur Rós, and together we watched the video for Glósóli at his kitchen table. He reminded me that when I go to Iceland I will be able to run up this cliff, like the children in this exquisite video (don’t worry, I won’t try to fly off the edge!).

BTW: I am heading to Los Angeles on August 12 to see Sigur Rós on their current tour. Counting the days.

Vintage Class Photos

07/27/12

When I was in my early 20′s I began collecting vintage ephemera. One of my first collections was vintage school (or “class”) photos. I love the beautiful sepia tones, the stoic (and sometimes silly) expressions on the kids faces.

I particularly love this photo, take in a classroom.

Even more impressive is the back of the photo, which includes the names of all of the children.

Two of my favorites are these class photos that include each of my parents. This one is a “household physics class” at Cornell where my mom went to college in the late 50′s. ” I learned things like elementary plumbing, care of a sewing machine, changing oil in car, repairing an electrical cord and on and on, ” she says. She’s the one with the cute bangs:

After my dad got the photo below at his 50th high school reunion, he sent it my way. He was the male lead in the play (Warmest Glow) and is pictured sitting second from left in the front row. This was in the late 50′s. The formal dress is so amazing!

Have a great weekend, friends.

Coming Soon: My Lettering as Fonts!

07/26/12

{image via London Design Guide}

I am so excited to announce a really special project (and dream come true): I’m collaborating with a very talented type designer on creating fonts from a few of my hand lettered alphabets. I was approached last month by said designer about collaborating and could not be more excited (her name and her company to be revealed soon).

We’re still in the process of font development (I draw + scan, then she cleans, kerns, etc). Eventually the fonts will be for sale on myfonts.com.

I’ll keep you posted, but wanted to share this exciting news. Goes to show you: when you start a project, you never know where it will land.

You Are So Loved

07/24/12

It’s always a pleasure to work with Chronicle Books. And one of their latest projects — You Are So Loved — was no exception. It’s a follow up to their previous best-selling book of inspirational phrases penned by artists: Everything is Going to be Okay. Just like its predecessor, You Are So Loved is a visual feast that will make you feel really good.

This is the piece I contributed to the book, on page 13:

And here are just a few of my favorites from the book:
