CJM Opening

02/17/12

Wednesday night was super fun and a completely amazing experience. The exhibit was so beautiful! I highly recommend a look if you are in SF. There are some really great pieces in the show.

Thank you to everyone on Twitter and Facebook who wished me well and congratulated me about this momentous event in my life. There were too many of you to respond to personally. I think I got over 150 individual congratulatory tweets, comments and messages this week, and I loved each one of them. Thank you! I’m feeling very lucky this week. Maybe someday I will become jaded. But right now I am appreciating everything that is happening.

My partner Clay is taking me away this weekend on a surprise trip. I know only to pack some clothing and that our road bikes are coming with us. No one has ever done this for me before. She is THE BEST. {I’ll report back on Monday about where we ended up!}

Happy weekend, friends.

Shaun O’Dell

I was at the SF MOMA this past weekend and saw a piece by Shaun O’Dell and was reminded of how much I love his work. These are from his series Portal Oh! Portal.

YES

02/15/12

Today is a good day.  And probably (aside from the day I am finally legally allowed to get married) will be one of the most important days of my entire life.

And I will tell you why: I am in the first museum show of my career, and it opens tonight. Yes, with a fancy VIP party. And Yoko Ono is in the exhibition too.

Six years ago I didn’t even self identify as an artist, because I didn’t think I qualified. And today, this.

Follow your dreams, people. They do come true.

Thank you, Contemporary Jewish Museum of San Francisco. I love you.

{You can see my piece for the show here.}

Heart Playing Cards

02/14/12

In honor of Valentine’s day I thought I’d share of of my favorite heart playing cards from my collection. Vintage playing cards are my latest obsession. I can’t get enough of them! Not only are the faces fantastic, but so are the backs. Check out each of these cards above flipped over!

Have a great day, everyone.

On Being an Aunt to Mia

02/13/12

One of the greatest joys in my life is my relationship with my niece Mia. Mia turned 12 in December. Yep, she’s a tall kid (she’s almost my height at about 5’6″ already and will likely grow to be very tall). She’s also incredibly kind and empathetic, enormously intelligent, oozes creativity and excitement about life, and is just plain really fun to be around. Mia lives in Portland, OR and is the daughter of my incredibly talented sister Stephanie, so I don’t get to see her on a regular basis. Most of the time, I see Mia in Portland when I come to visit¬† few times a year. We bonded early on in her life. I spent a lot of time visiting my sister and her family in Portland after Mia was born until my life got really busy about four years ago (and now I don’t get to go as often). My sister also has a son named Miles whom I adore. He’s a couple years younger than Mia.

For the first time this past weekend Mia came to visit San Francisco. She came with her mom and my mom (her grandma) for my brother’s and sister-in-law’s baby shower, and they spent the weekend. It was the most fun I’ve had in a long, long time. It was so great to see Mia so excited about being in San Francisco. We went to Japantown (she’s a big Manga buff), my studio, the Golden Gate Bridge, downtown, my neighborhood, etc. etc.

I will never have kids of my own. I came to my current career late in life, and right now that’s what I’d like to focus on for the next 20+ years. But it feels really special to have a close relationship with a kid, and I feel so lucky that Mia is that kid I get to have a relationship with right now. She’s an amazing human being, and I feel so privileged to have watched her grow up and to watch her even now — in the midst of her “awkward” adolescence — continue to change and flourish. She has always made me feel so joyful (when I was in the midst of a terrible depression in my early 30’s I went to visit often just to be around her). Sometimes after I see her (and I have to be apart from her) I ache a little bit inside because I miss her so much!

Part of the reason I have such a great relationship with Mia is because my sister encourages and supports it. I am so thankful for her also.

Happy Monday.
