Original Animal Paintings

Every week (for several weeks) I’ll be releasing a few of the original paintings from the Dictionary of Ordinary Extraordinary Animals that I illustrated last year! This week I’ve released the nine above. At the time of this post, three have sold (the owl, the whale and the hummingbird), but the other six remain for sale. I’ll release several more next week. You can take a look at what’s still available here in my shop. If there is a specific animal from the book that you would like, feel free to email me.

Thanksgiving Weekend

For Thanksgiving weekend, my family (mom, dad, brother, SIL, sister, BIL, their two kids, my parent’s dog, me, my partner Clay and our dog Wilfredo), gathered at an enormous 1970′s beach house on the coast just below the Oregon border in California. The weekend was filled with lots of food, wine, football, walks on the beach (the weather was stunning), toe nail polish, gorgeous sites and sounds…and did I mention food?

These photos were all taken/posted with Instagram (I’m @lisacongdon on Instagram if you’d like to follow), but I’ll post more photos later this week that I took with my SLR.

Now, back to the daily grind. See you tomorrow!

Patterned Patterns

I was in extreme pattern making mode yesterday and here are three I completed. All are available for license through Lilla Rogers Studio.

I’m off on vacation tomorrow to visit with my family for the upcoming holiday. I’m hoping to post some images while I’m away, so stay tuned.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Drawn by Samantha Hahn!

Friend and fellow illustrator Samantha Hahn recently drew my portrait (with my dog Wilfredo! See above) for an amazing exhibition of her work that included some of her daily drawings, blogger portraits (that’s where I came in), and visual tributes of great women of literature, including incarnations of Helen of Troy. The show is now over sadly (was at Gallery Hanahou in NY), but I feel so lucky to have been “captured” by such a talent. Thank you, Samantha!

Creature Comforts Gift Guide

I’m so excited to be included in Ez’ Gifted Holiday Gift Guide this year! She always puts together such a great collection of stuff, and I’m honored that she included my Snowy Owl print this year. You can get the print here, and be sure to check out the entire gift guide for amazing finds.

Yay for Repeat Patterns

I’m super excited about the pattern making frenzy I was on a couple weeks ago (making repeats is so much fun!). I’ve had to take a hiatus from it for the past 10 days to focus on a children’s book that I’m illustrating (the sketches are due tomorrow), but I’ll be back at it this coming week. Wishing you an awesome Thursday.

Norwegian Reindeer

This weekend the two drawings above (top: male, bottom: female, both graphite and gouache on paper) will be in the Biennial show that opens at Michael Rosenthal Contemporary Fine Art.  They are 16×20 inches each (so rather large) and will be framed under glass in white.  If you have any interest in either or both, please contact me and I’ll connect you with the gallery. The opening is Saturday from 6-9. Stop by and take a look if you are in San Francisco!

If you like reindeer in patterned clothing, you might also be interested in this piece (now for sale on 20×200). I highly recommend the larger sizes (the original painting was 18×24 inches).

Camp Mighty

This past weekend I had the opportunity to go to Camp Mighty at the Ace in Palm Springs — both as a speaker and an attendee. It was awesome. The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs is really a cool place. I met so many amazing people at camp and learned so much. Yesterday it was really hard to get back into the groove of work after four days of friends (new and old), hours in the hot tub, interesting speakers, a space-themed costume party (see my get-up above) and gorgeous desert surroundings. Incidentally, the attendees of Camp Mighty collectively raised over $25,000 for Charity Water! Yes.

I’m so excited to announce my 9th release on the amazing 20×200! This time it’s a painting I made this summer entitled “Reindeer”. You can purchase the print in three sizes + read more about the work here.

I’m off to Camp Mighty!

I am headed today to Palm Springs, California, to the Ace Hotel for Camp Mighty. I am giddy with excitement, and I promise to take pictures.

That means I won’t be posting again until Monday, November 14. But I have exciting news to share that day, so be sure to stop back by.

Ships + More Ships

I have had a thing for ships for some years now. I am not sure what it is about them, but I love them. The work above is just a sliver of all the ships I’ve drawn and painted over the years. Some of the pieces above are available in my shop so take a look if you see something you like.

It’s Complicated + It’s Simple

I made these two drawings last year (top: It’s Complicated, bottom: It’s Simple). The originals are still available here. Limited edition archival prints of each are available in my shop (but hurry because It’s Complicated is almost sold out).

On another note, if you are interested in hearing me chat about being a working artist + my thoughts on being self employed, Sister Diane of Crafty Pod has just released a new podcast interview with me! You can learn more about it and download it here.

Midnight Sun

As many of you know, I am obsessed with Iceland (and no, I haven’t been there…yet). This is one of the most amazing things I have seen in a very long time. I cannot stop watching it.

This short time lapse film was shot during the Icelandic Midnight Sun in June of 2011. For 17 days the filmmaker travelled solo around the entire island shooting almost 24 hours, sleeping in the car, and eating whenever he had the time. He shot 38,000 images and traveled some 2900 miles.

My Studio on SF Girl By Bay

One week ago, my friend and fellow blogger Victoria came out to my studio to take some photos to share on her blog. While she walked around my studio with her camera snapping away, we caught up and gossiped a bit, which resulted in a lot of laughter and even some new travel plans. It felt like having a friend over for a cozy morning hang out and most definitely not a photo shoot.

On Wednesday of this week, Victoria made a post about her visit on her beautiful blog and shared some of the photos she took that day. They are so amazing! She had effortlessly captured the real energy of the place. And hearing what other folks had to say {through tweets, comments and personal emails} about my space was one of the most surprising, wonderful and humbling experiences I’ve had in a long time. If you haven’t had a chance to see Victoria’s post, you can view it here.

Happy Friday. See you Monday.
